Tarot decks have a rich history of teaching through visual language, the type of teaching dependent on time period, location, and culture. While each card has very specific meanings that can be studied, personal interpretation is also expected and encouraged.

The card represented here is Strength, no. 8 of the major arcana. Even without knowing the symbolic history of the card, a viewer would “read” the central figures of the lady and the lion, the lemniscate, and the knight on horseback. To many people these are universal symbols that would have shifting layers of meaning intended to inform, illuminate, and obscure.
